Avoiding business name conflicts when registering business

I have an idea rolling around that I'd like to move forward, but this one needs to be registered as a business right off the bat.

There is one place I found on the internet that is operating with this name, although they are using a goofy domain name that isn't any of the ones I registered. A couple of other places are sort of using the name, almost in a secondary fashion (if that makes sense).

I checked my states corporation name database and all important variations of the name are available without conflict. Seems to me that if no one has taken the time to register the name, that I am clear to do so?

I'd say to check and see if the business name is trademarked first before proceeding since a Trademarked name carries more weight. There might be a reason that the other websites are using the name in a secondary fashion and not as the main business name.
