There seems to be a trend toward the acquisition of content and community sites by large e-commerce sites. For example, Expedia now owns the two largest "user review" travel megasites, along with the #1 cruising community site and the leading airline seatmap site. And the best-known digital-photography review site now belongs to Amazon.com.
Isn't this a bit like having General Motors owning CAR AND DRIVER or Hugo Boss acquiring GQ? What impact (if any) is this trend likely to have on the credibility of the Web as a publishing and community medium?
