I would imagine that training would include everything from how to get business leads, how to deal with common problems with clients, and other industry-specific aspects of running a design company. I know that my business would be very different today had I gotten early training as opposed to learning the ropes through trial by error.
Has anyone considered establishing a consulting firm that helps someone establish their own design firm?
Hmmm, could that be interpreted as an oxymoron? :)

Ah, but we learn though trial and error which I feel is the best method. I'll agree, it's nice to have a Professional Peer and/or Peers around to assist in your growth. But, isn't that why we are here at WebmasterWorld?
Years and years ago I found "Networking Amongst Peers" to be the "absolute best" source of information. It still is today. :)
It seems as though there are a handful of books on the subject of starting a web design business, but they're dated. Has anyone considered establishing a consulting firm that helps someone establish their own design firm?
hmm... gears are turning in my head...
1. taking advantage of the global economy
