I have been thinking about offering freelance seo for web design companies that don't have or offer that type of service to supplement my income . The only problem is how to go about offering my services. I was thinking about sending emails to the companies but I am not sure how to word it. Would something like this work?

Hello, I am so & so and I would like to offer my seo services to your company that would be useful as an added service to your clients. I have .. years experience in the field of seo.....

Any suggestions or examples?

Wouldn't this be spamming?

How about an ad in a trade publication?

Habtom - do you mean this forum or in general as in sending them emails?

most of the web design companies are located where I live some even have job postings for seo so that what I was thinking of going after.

If they have employment links on their site, basically inviting queries, that is one thing. But Habtom is referring to the email - by definition, any unsolicited email is spam. Even one. Please don't take offense, but if you are considering freelance SEO work, not knowing this may adversely affect your success in your endeavors.

As someone that gets spammed daily I can really appreciate the hyper-sensitive nature all of us have towards unsolicited emails, but I really think this is going a bit too far. After all if you aren't allowed to email anyone until they ask for it or give explicit permission then why even put your address on the web site?

Companies put email forms and/or links on their sites so people can communicate with them. If you use that link to send a single, personalized email introducing yourself and asking about their interest one email at a time, one company at a time, in my opinion, this is not spamming it is communicating. If you built a list off of all these sites and then blasted them with even one message that would be spamming.

Unsolicited Commercial Email... no two ways about it unless the company in question is explicitly inviting such emails.

An alternative would be to pick up the phone and get the ball rolling that way. You'll probably encounter resistance as getting top speak to the right person isn't always straightforward but it's much easier to sell yourself in a phonecall. They'll probably ask you to follow up with an email but at least you'll know who to write to, roughly what they want and you'll be able to call them back a week later if they haven't responded.

I know some people won't like phoning either but it's far more acceptable than spam.
