They quote really low per month rates but you need to buy 3 months, or 6 months or 12 months. Seems like a trend in the entire webhosting industry? Should I bite the bullet and sign up for multi-month?

A trend? It's been this way since I first started comparing hosting plans almost a decade ago. Time-based discounts are common in losts of industries. There's a definite savings and more stability in not having to process payments each month.

I just dealt with a client who didn't understand their needs will change (hopefully) in 4 years which is a lifetime on the web.

1and1 offers like $4/month if you prepay for 4 years where monthly it's like $20/month

The intent is to get you to prepay now and by the time next year rolls around their costs have gone down but they'll already collected a higher amount from you.

There are many who do that, it's standard practice.
