Networking will definitely be one of your biggest client pull strategies.

Almost every contract I've ever done was initiated through someone I knew.

I'll agree with the networking.

I'd suggest targeting a few local clients. Maybe an establishment that you go to regularly that hasn't embraced the web yet? A local restaurant? Drycleaners? Etc...

I've found that joining local business associations and the chamber of commerce helps. Downside is that it can cost a couple of hundred per year per organization.

Also, the business card exchanges, etc take a while to get results. People need to know you and trust you before they give you any business. On the other hand, you have a better idea of the type of clients they will be.

Networking skills take time to develop. I lost a lot of opportunities by getting business cards from the people I met and not doing anything with them (I know - I win the stoooopid award for that)... Now I am taking any cards I get and sending a short email to those people within 24 hours.

Join your local chapter of BNI
Best move I ever done!

You will learn a great deal about introducing yourself and your services
