I have just finished a project for a client and he asked me for an invoice which I gladly mailed him. Now, once he pays, should I mail him a receipt too? Or is an invoice enough for most client's needs? What do you guys usually do?

Just an invoice - unless receipt is requested.

Unless your client happens to pay in cash a receipt is not needed to protect him against any further payment demands.

But you have to decide about your own style of doing business. A brief thank you note ("for your business and your prompt payment"...or say whatever makes sense to you), for example, has the advantage of assuring the customer that the payment has been received and is now acknowledged.

It is also a matter of simple, old fashioned courtesy. This may mean nothing to some customers but is likely to be appreciated by others.

There is one absolute rule, however: KEEP IT BRIEF!
