Every year for the past 5 years, we hear about the states getting together to setup a streamlined Sales Tax.

Brick and Mortar Buisnesses have long complained that companies with no nexus (presence) in a particular customer state has been getting a free ride, since the customer does not pay sales tax for an online purchase.

The customer is still legally requried to volunteer to pay this tax as a use tax. But when was the last time you volunteered to pay tax.

This initiated by the states (now 45 members) is called the streamlined sales tax initiative.

Their logo is "promoting a streamlined sales tax system for the 21 century". At the rate they are going, its should read 22 century.

This is fine for most of us, as comparing brick and mortar to internet businesses is like comparing apple and oranges.

What ever the states decide on this, is still going to be a nightmare, when it comes to accounting, as you well know, nothing ever good or simple ever comes from a comittee.

Using your crystal ball, does anybody ever see this unified sales tax system ever fly?, and if so, whats your prediction for implementation.

There is a reason they invented that saying the the only things you can be sure of is death and taxes. If it is one thing I know government will NEVER fail to figure out a way to implement a new tax!

Trust me this will eventually be put in place and yes I believe you are correct it will be a nightmare indeed.
