Profit Making Web Site Models

I read a lot of threads where someone mentions almost in passing that they have developed content and are making money on this or that web site. I am always intrigued by these comments and tempted to ask what they are doing, but the thread always seems to be talking about other stuff so I don't want to break the string.

Anyway I was wondering if those of you that are creating for profit web sites what models or types of things you are doing. I am not saying post your URL or exact details, just speak in generalities, what types of models do you use.

The ones I know about are eCommerce and building content up on some topic and then selling every square inch of ad space you can, which seems like it would be ineffective with the proliferation of ad block software and attitudes of visitors on clicking on ads, but maybe I am wrong.

Anyway I thought I would start a thread on this and see what happens.

I spent a couple of years working with some guys that were making fantastic sums of money from their news & newsletter sites. Well the money was pretty good for the amount of ongoing effort the sites needed. They were clever in that to expand the business they just needed to target a different vertical market. Most of their content came from 3rd parties as well.

My other tip is to stick to boring & dull widgets (like these guys I knew) - remember the old saying "where there's muck, there's brass". After all, one of the richest families in Britain made their money from selling widgets for putting fruit juice in!

I sell my own shareware from my website, it's quite a good way to make a modest income, and there's the small chance (dream!) of becoming very wealthy. Having an actual product on your website is very useful in generating traffic, sometimes you can make more money from the visitors than from the actual product sales.

I also researched a bit this topic. A good start is here:

I have a website that gives retail stores within a particular niche a full page of information about their stores. Visitors to the site can find the stores by clicking on state maps, searching a particular state for a specific product, etc.

I charge the stores $100 a year to be on the site, which is very inexpensive advertising. So, the majority of stores stay on the site.

Getting stores on the site, though, and getting them to renew requires calling them, which is very time-consuming. The upside is that the more calls I make, the more money I make. When I'm able to be on the phone eight hours a day, five days a week, the site brings in good money. On a good day, I'm able to get five or six paid renewals, plus one or two new stores.

Eventually, the site should produce enough that it will be my sole source of income.

I also run a few banner ads on the site, and I'm considering selling some niche-related accessories on the site.

Great start, I think I am just not being creative enough about this. I had another idea a while ago and I actually have the domain I want reserved, which was to start a site that was a directory of my city, which is in competition with another similar site, but I had the idea of putting up a site that restaurants could post their menus on and place promos and such.

I like the idea of content based sites that make money, but what are some of the models that people use, pay to click, sell the content, sell related products, etc. I am sure all of these are in use, but in people's experience what has been the best models and why?

Secret 101: It is all about traffic!

Read that 1000+ times and learn :) Never, ever, never forget that rule!

You can make money from just about any subject content if you can generate traffic!

I made millions from real estate websites (1999-2004), I'm happy to give this away now, as real estate is as dead as a door nail and virtually useless as a startup enterprise! You have to find another source today!

There are numerous out there! Pick an industry sector that is "hot" and then utilize it.

It really isn't that hard to find something "hot". Talk to people, learn what the "crowd" are "hot" about. Then work out how to make money from it!

A little research, some basic development skills, a lot of psychology and you will have a winner :)
