Getting listed on search engines

I’ve just launched my web site. I’ve heard that 80% of traffic on web is generated by search Engines. Is that really true? How can I get my site listed on a search engine?

Welcome to the system Karen.

Close to true by some estimates. That is a bit high for today, but it is still significant.

Start visiting search engines and submitting your site. Look for a "submit site", or "add url" option. Some of the bigger search engines:

google.com, altavista.com, alltheweb.com, hotbot.com, teoma.com, wisenut.com, lycos.com...

Hi karenglover, welcome to WebmasterWorld! These forums are an amazing source of information. For search engine submission procedures and tips, it is easiest to use the "site search" function at the top of this page. You will probably want to check into rules for each engine you submit to.

It varies greatly. Most sites see a larger percentage of traffic when brand new. The ratio for SE referrals lowers as you gain more and more repeat visitors and outside referrals. Some established sites see about 25% of their total traffic come from the search engines.

About 30% of my traffic is from search engines alone.

Many are from referals, and people returning from bookmarks. :)

No matter what it is the search engines will play a huge part in your traffic if you play the rules correctly.

Nip over to [dmoz.org...] - find the appropriate category for you site and submit it once - It's the Open Directory and serves as a kind of master list of sites for many of the major SE's.

After your site is listed there the search engines will come to you. Good luck.

karen what theme is your site i would check out some of the directory sites.

take a peak for example at tiggers user profile if your site is a business in the south of england his site may help you.

do a search for your product and town in google then find thier add url or email them direct link exchange really works well.

if you are not listed in Inktomi then pay the reaper.

I've a client who wants to know stats. Brett says 80% of traffic from search engines is too high. Also told that 25% of traffic from SEs with an established site. Can someone provide me with stats I could quote?

Brett is certainly not a bad source of infomation to quote from, as long as he is ok with it.
