I want to sign up for various affiliate programs but do not want to hand out my SSN to all these companies. Can I get an EIN from the IRS without having and business/dba etc?

I'm not sure but I **think** a business name is required, even if it's as simple as your own name. Why wouldn't you want a business name? Choosing a name is one of the fun and cool things about working for yourself. :-) It's most certainly the last EASY thing . . .
You can get an EIN in as little as a couple hours over the phone, I can't remember the exact process but dig around the IRS site.
