Scenario. Client is a small corporation needing both an e-commerce site and a general corporate site set up. The corporate sitegoes smoothly. The E-Commerce site is all set to go. Just need to point the domain to the new server.

Right...

Domain was registered in 2001. Whois shows corporation as owner.

Unfortunately, the admin contact is a person that literally no one can remember, and all contact info is outdated and useless.

It gets worse...

The Tech contact is a domain reseller company.

My attempts to contact the regsitrar of record get forwarded to the reseller. My attempts to contact the reseller (tech contact) fall in a black hole, except for one vague initial response that was suggestive of the notion that the reseller does not speak english as a first language.

My question to the registrar and reseller has been, "What documentation do I need to provide to establish that I am authorized to administer this domain for Widget, Inc."

To date the closest we have gotten is a single poorly worded response to fax a copy of my license. While I can assume that they meant the business license, there was no fax number provided - in fact no contact info at all.

So, I need to light a fire under these people to get things moving again. I have never run into a problem quite like this.

Any suggestions from my more experienced colleagues on how to motivate a registrar to respond to inquiries?

Read up on UDRP, then wave it under the nose of the registrar. [icann.org...]

(Surprised to hear of such a response from the registrar.)

Grrr... I could just spit nails.

Finally received a reply from the reseller. Paraphrased, it states, "Contact you webhosting provider."

Not sure these people even bother to read the communications.

Still no fax/phone supplied.

So, we escalate a bit. I have fired of an email to both the registrar and reseller suggesting that we are prepared to take legal action if this is not quickly resolved.
