A business book about web dev business says to price websites according to the requirements and value it brings to the client. I agree with that strategy and usually do it that way in word of mouth coversations with people.
But these phone calls seem to be just inquiring about a price, they don't care about anything else.
How should I go about it? Basically I want to know the polite way of telling them that I don't compete based on price and steer them into thinking in terms of value for money.
But as they will insist on a quote anyway, something along the lines of the following may work:
"As every site is different, it is impossible to give you an exact price without knowing your specific requirements, needs, purposes, and expectations for the site. In the past, we have designed sites of that size for between $#*$! and $xx,#*$!."
Alternatively, you could say something like, "Without knowing more details about your requirements, I will have to give you the high end of our estimates: $#*$!,#*$!. The actual price will probably be quite a bit lower than that, but without knowing your specifics, that's the best I can estimate."
