Dealing with phone pricing

I recently ranked in a good position for a good term. Now I get several phone calls a day asking for a price for an N page website (where N is between 5 and 10). It's really difficult to estimate the price of a website based on the number of pages. I never do it and I hate doing it. But people call in and ask! I never had to deal with this before.

A business book about web dev business says to price websites according to the requirements and value it brings to the client. I agree with that strategy and usually do it that way in word of mouth coversations with people.

But these phone calls seem to be just inquiring about a price, they don't care about anything else.

How should I go about it? Basically I want to know the polite way of telling them that I don't compete based on price and steer them into thinking in terms of value for money.

In general, I have found that any potential client who focuses just on price so early in the conversation is going to be nothing but trouble. They almost always have unreal expecations and want the world for next to nothing, and they needed it done yesterday.

But as they will insist on a quote anyway, something along the lines of the following may work:
"As every site is different, it is impossible to give you an exact price without knowing your specific requirements, needs, purposes, and expectations for the site. In the past, we have designed sites of that size for between $#*$! and $xx,#*$!."

Alternatively, you could say something like, "Without knowing more details about your requirements, I will have to give you the high end of our estimates: $#*$!,#*$!. The actual price will probably be quite a bit lower than that, but without knowing your specifics, that's the best I can estimate."

That's how I feel like too! I guess then we are right :)

The suggestion about the roof price is good. I'll definitely use it!
