Priority of Education

Inspired by tedster's thread here [webmasterworld.com], it got me thinking hard about the priority of education in the web development arena. The reality of anyone reading this post points to at least a basic understanding of continual learning and expanding your knowledge base (or just an addiction to WebmasterWorld :)).

So, if you were to break it down, what percentage of your time goes to learning? If I were to make a guess, I would put it at 30%

If you are in the business of making a website educating people, like www.searchengineworld.com, then you are learning while you work, and learning how to work

I run a biology site, so I learn about biology. At the same time, I go to college doing a degree in "information technology", and while im making other sites, im learning how to make them!

If I were to talk solely about learning the sort of things i read on here - 50%

Don't really know what percentage of my time is spent learning... I'm inclined to say that in a rapidly changing field like web design & promotion, almost everything you do is in some way educational. But as far as priorities? Learning should be right behind paying your bills on the priority list...

Mortgage? Check. Groceries? Check. Internet Service? Check. Learning full XHTML/CSS layout & compliance? Working on it... ;)

Sometimes I spend 70% learning and 30% doing sometimes the other way round.

Mine is pretty cyclical. Everytime I need to learn a new skill for my job, I sit and spend LOTS of time on it. Then I spend time applying what I have learned.

For a couple of years I averaged almost 8 hours per day of pure research (both SEO and wider marketing stuff). That then was 50% learning and 50% practice.

These days I still average about 4-5 hours a day, so yes, around 30%, same as JamesR.

Nice topic.

I spend a 1/3rd of the day reading news and "manuals" of some sort. I'm just glad I'm an info junkie. It sure helps to stay abreast of things (eg: see this site [webamsterworld.com] for the living embodiement of that philosophy). It's hard to break it down since I find it so enjoyable. I know I watch very little TV news any more.
