Business insurance for a website

In the process of looking into an umbrella policy I have found that I also now need incidental business insurance for my website. I was told I could call my home owners insurance and see if a rider could be added to that.

When I called State Farm I was told that they do not do business insurance for web sites. So now, my question is do any of you know of reputable insurance company that provides business insurance for websites in New York?

Any info would be appreciated.

I tried many times and could not find any. The big question was: what are you insuring? The website content, the server or your search engine positioning. If the answer is server or hardware that's easy, otherwise, I could not find any insurer who would provide me with a policy.

I am looking insurance predominantly for liability and hardware. There has got to be a provider out there willing to insure us.

On hardware: you could lease your hardware. It would be normal practise for the hosting company to lease the hardware to you, and for it to be their problem to replace it if it fails.

Thanks for the heads up on the thread.

As for the hardware, I currently own it, so I am in the bag for that. I would hardware business insurance should not be a problem to get though and is really the least of my concerns.

I don't need insurance, simply because I have made it impossible for anyone to sue me. So I don't need the added costs, and I don't have to add that cost on to my clients, which makes them happy!

We are independant business people, we should not be controlled by lawyers ;)

That sounds all and good in a post here on WebmasterWorld..but the reality is that a business is a business, and people in the states are sue happy. So its better to be safe than sorry.

Even with the limited liability of LLCs and Corporations there is still risk to a person personally in some situations. Why take that risk if you can get insurance at an affordable rate?

Point is pretty much moot, as I have not even found a carrier willing to insure my site.

At the very least an publisher should have an error and omissions policy. The three greatest things a wise businessman has: a good banker, a good accountant and a good attorney!
