Are there any new wrinkles?

I am retired. I am working on a business site to generate some extra income.

I've developed some basic web building know-how. I have a reliable host running
2 sites for me. Now I want to do something for real.

I find that the field in which I am most experienced is a field where I have little chance of
reaching page one on a typical Google search.

I have also determined that an advertising revenue type of bus model is my best choice.

I've been studying an old Tabke post (2/3/02) that someone referred to I believe on this forum. His recommendations such as simple site design with lots of quality content, short pages, key words in the right place, etc. I can do.

My question is, since this is 2006 and the web moves fast is this still a valid game plan or are there some new wrinkles that I need to know about? For example is it worth experimenting with Adwords and Adsense?

The simple, plain (or even "ugly") site aesthetic is still in fashion. Google has kept with it, and witness myspace, craigs list, and others.

You're definitely going to want to look into AdSense. Affiliate links, too, if they apply to your site's topic.
