Where do you want to live?

The World is shrinking!

There are at this point in time many great places for financially independent people to live and work. (typical web developers)

Most are around the Caribbean Sea, Belize, the Bahamas, Honduras, the Virgin Islands. Some further away like SE Asia, Islands in the Indian Ocean....etc., etc......

My question is where would you want to live and why?

Thailand of course! Great food, great weather, value for money, great shopping and only a couple of hours from places like Singapore and Hong Kong.

Somewhere nice and warm all year round close to a beach. Most likely an island but not a small one because I like crowded places. One example: Crete.

I'm happy in Canada.

I would want to be able to take off to a nice warm beach whenever I feel like it though - I would assume I'd be able to afford it if I was independently wealthy :)

This is going sound really mundane, but is 1st Avenue in Frinton on Sea - truly some of the most impressive but managable sized houses here.

Or a geogorgian town house over looking Parkers piece in Cambridge.

Mozambique, without a doubt. Tofu Beach, Inhambane, to be precise. Although I don't think they've heard of broadband yet. Might have to lug a satellite dish along with me...

Anywere warm really - Dont need a beach but a pool would be good. I would actually love staying at a holiday resort - Nightlife, drink, heat, sun, pool, bar, drink, alcohol, heat + more alcohol, loud music, ladies, women, drink, loud music, pool...

This time next year - I'll be having a laugh in spain living it up..

I live in Scotland and I love it. Would just prefer a bit more snow though as my skis don't get enough use.
I think if I moved anywhere it would have to be Canada.

I think spain or the USA could be a great place to live, but the USA you need a greencard, that could be a problem. Valencia I think sound like a great place, a big town at the sea with a good football team.

Canada also sounds great, but I think there is also greencard issues.

Unfortunately I'm tied to one of the most expensive Cities in the World to live in because it's where my friends and family are. I don't think I'm able to just up sticks and move.

Which is a shame, as the sentiment behind the title to this thread is spot on. As a webmaster, you really can live anywhere there's decent internet access and a power supply for your laptop.

But there are other things to consider as well as geography, expenses and being able to work online.

I have lived in two countries, Britain (in London and Manchester) and Sri Lanka. Which is preferable depends on what you want:

Sri Lanka:

Warm weather and a predictable climate
Fairly good beaches
Huge variety of climate and landscape in a smallish country
Much lower cost of living
More of my family

Britain (especially London) has:

Better/more bookshops, museums, art galleries, theatres, music, restaurants and bars
Better and a greater variety of beer, wine and food available
Cool weather (nice when you want to go for a walk)
Better infrastructure (internet, roads, railways)
Huge cultural variety in cities (especially London)
Almost all my friends

It all depends on what you like to do. Go swimming or go for a walk? Go out for a reasonably good meal cheap or splash out for an expensive one?

Its all personal, but I would give people who are thinking of moving countries a few warnings:

You do not know what its really like to live there till you try it. Do not burn your boats.
Moving can be very traumatic for children, they cannot rationalise and understand culture shock
Work/legal/cultural environments can hold all sorts of surprises.

Well New Zealand ain't to shabby, in particular Nelson which is close to 3 National Parks and has great weather in summer. I could also see myself living in the little sea side town of Lynmouth in Devon. London is a funny place, I hated it when I was there for 7 months but missed it when I left. Anyway I am going to Malta in 3 weeks for 2 months as my girlfriends dad owns a place on the beach :)...ain't laptops great.

I am living in Shanghai now. But I'd been lots cities not only in China, but also in USA as well. And my favorite city might be San Francisco, with fantastic beach and great climate.

Thanks for the responses....although most say it happens to be where they live now.....which I have a hard time believing!

As the poster I quoted stated the separation from family can be an issue, but, I think in modern society it is not a huge leap! Your family might become distant in miles, but, no reason for them to become distant in thoughts or visits to each other.
