Task/Project Management Software

Something web based

We've got ourselves a pickle here...

We've got a graphic designer, a software developer, a web developer, a SEO (me), and a boss all trying to pull off major and minor web site updates.

The problem is that tasks are just being thrown out there, no one knows who is doing what, etc.

We need something to get us organized. We're not set up to be able to utilize Outlook, so I need some sort of web based task management or project management software. Preferrably free (haha) but I'm sure I could convince the boss to spend the money to get us organized.

Any suggestions?

Is there anyway you could set outlook up? From what I've found it's the best for task managment and organizing stuff between groups.

I wish we could, but our network isn't set up that way. We've got about 100 stand-alones connected by one or two shared servers.

Unless one person sends tasks to people... but even then, you can't see what tasks are assigned to which people, only what you've been assigned. And that kind of puts us back to square one.

I don't know what it would cost but you might look into seting up your network another way. I think what makes it posible is to have an enchange server with outlook server on it. This would handle all your mail. If you have a 100 pcs then it would probably be very smart to have a solid network. Please tell me you don't just have 100 pcs daisy chained together.

Did you try searching for online project managment in your favorite search engine? It seems there are several compaines offering this service.

dotProject is a free (open source I think) online project management tool. We just started using it in the office, and the course I'm taking in college on project management is also teaching dotProject.

I've also heard good stuff about function fox.

I checked out the dotProject demo, looks pretty sweet. And you can't beat the price ;)

-Basecamp is good if you're small but not scalable.

-Autotask is a good stepping stone but more focused on service calls.

-We're looking into Project Arena right now and everything looks great about it so far.

-MS Project is probably not what you're looking for.

-Outlook with some plugins can be configured to be effective for you but its not scalable.

We use BaseCamp where I work. It's all right, nothing special.

Go to SourceForge and type in project management or something like that. You'll get more hits than you know what to do with. And all open source.

we use mantis - excellent online software. its primarily a bug tracker... but works perfectly for tracking all tasks assocaited in project management.

I have been looking for a free/inexpensive web-based project management tool for a client recently. Someone recommended PHProject, which looks interesting - any experiences?

Lyndsay, have you decided on a solution yet?

We're using NetOffice, that is free. It's similar to Ms Project, but much limited and simpler as well. You can basicaly track tasks there, share files, assign tasks, etc. It's even can drow a gant diagram for you.

Yup, it was decided that our disorganized madness is the way to go.

Our Web Developer and Graphic Designer have been tied up with another project for the past month or so, and pretty much all the work has been falling on me.

Which I don't mind at all, since then I can organize it my way.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I am sure that the day will come again when I'll push for task management software again.
