Fastest way to build a list?

What has worked for you?

I'm currently using contests/events with opt-ins, and I've got a few JV endorsements in the works with other newsletter publishers...

But that's about it.

PPC seems too expensive for what it would actually collect.

Any ideas?

The fastest way I've found to build a list is to place a prominent newsletter subscription box on your existing popular website.
