SEO's, where do you land on the company org chart?

Ok, I'm curious about this. Up until recently I've been under sales and marketing for our online team. People are now not quite sure where in the world I should be, sales and marketing, production or editorial. I figure sales and marketing if I'm working in a team effort for our sites.

Where are you sitting on the company org chart? If you are working on contract, do you present yourself as site design, marketing or something else in particular that people understand what you are doing.

I am a member of our marketing team.

As outside contractors, we are always with the marketing group. Sometimes w/ the VP Marketing, sometimes with Julie from the secretarial pool ;)

I work on contracts. Most of my clients are Web design agencies. They present me to theyr clients as the French equivalent of SEO wich is référenceur. But they let me explain what I will do for them. I worked for some SEO agency once. Now I run my own.

Agerhart, I take it you are now your own "department" then? Do you have SEO staff working for you?

:) I can relate, I don't know where I'm going to end up. Having your own section for SEO seems to make sense to me.

I'm in an unusual position in that I have overall control of the website since it is a project in itself...I also do all the donkey work since the staff on the project consists of me...I report to the Director General of the organisation

previously I was also in a similar position elsewhere...and in thejob before that very much part of teh marketing department

I'm in a cross-discipline information technology/design group, separate but close to the Public Affairs group (the government equivalent of marketing). I coordinate overall web activities in a matrix of leads & developers, which are located in units across the dept.

A very small one, but still a staff I suppose

That is where I was. We combined our two online web teams, our group was much smaller. My supervisor went up a notch in the org chart, so I have to end up under someone else directly under him.

Eventually I am supposed to have an assistant. Basically I've been running the show myself. My previous supervisor was just wonderful, gave me free rein on what to do and how to do it.

I'm part of the technical team. My role is online marketing and website design.

I am also considered IT as I split my time. I am "allowed" 50% of my time on Intranet development for IT/IS/DST support (designated by my main/old manager).

Allthough they have moved me out of the LAN support department. I now report to a group of managers.

It is interesting seeing how many different areas people are working in. I'm back to working for my previous supervisor, now I'm not going to be under the traditional marketing group or production.

GWJ, that must be interesting being 50% IT. So the rest is 50% SEO?

So, those under marketing, are you under a traditional marketing group or online marketing group? We call it online marketing but it's all under the traditional marketing group so far. Online is certainly what I do.

I guess we need more people like GWJ, being 50% IT and the rest 50% SEO. From my point of view many compromises are desperatly needed from both parts. I have seen so many unjustified techno stunts that makes some sites totally incompatible with search services.

I assisted so many meetings looking like a ping pong tournament.

Well, we are an online company that has a marketing department. I am in charge of online promotion / advertising. But I do a bunch of offline stuff also.

Kinda a mix between the two.
