I'm considering starting a small business offering web services - page design, dhtml programming, basic SEO, etc. I guess I just need to talk a little about this, because its really on my mind. Let me back up and tell a little about myself. My background is in PC programming and industrial automation. So HTML and Javascript was a fun hobby for me. I developed a cross-browser DHTML library, and provided it for others to use. Eventually I accepted moderator positions at some support forums. All this resulted in a lot of email questions and comments (more than I expected) - and now people are asking me to quote doing work for them - correcting existing dhtml, designing new pages, setting them up with their own "space", etc. For some time now I've been helping people do these things for free... but I'm putting way too much time into it now. I either need to keep it a hobby and reduce how much I do for others - or turn it into a business. PC programming was the same way for me. Initially it was just a hobby, but turned into my job - and I've been very pleased with how it has supported me and my family.
I'm looking into business licensing requirements. As far as I can tell, I only need a state license to do business - I don't live in any city limits. I have been asked by a few people if I am setup to accept government contracts. I don't know what the requirements are... do I need a special business license?
I've been reading the topics here concerning pricing structures and how to discuss this with the client. They have been very helpful.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.
Have a terrific weekend!
Mike
Good luck with the business Mike.
