Securing local family computers as a service?

Hello all,

I have two web-savvy kids and I’m constantly trying to stay on top of their web surfing…It gets difficult because I’m very busy with work, etc…I don’t use any of the “nanny” applications because in the past, when I tried to install them, my system started to crawl….

Anyway, a neighbor told me about a local pc guy who offers family pc security plans….I haven’t heard any details yet, but it sounds interesting to me because of the time I can save…it also sounds like a good business idea.

Does anyone here have experience with this type of service? Is there such a thing as “outsourcing” your family pc’s security?

Does anyone think that home pc security might possibly be a good business to focus on?

Thanks!

I think there's a feasible business model to be had there. Expert advice on how to secure the internet for children would be a valuable informational service. Sounds like a good thing to bundle into an IT service, but IT service is a tough field. You are responsible sometimes for people's interaction with their PC the same way a webmaster is responsible for the actions of owner of a website...they may only let you know half of what is going on, so you are blindsided. Fixing PC's and software applications is mostly a thankless job.

It costs time and money to learn how to use a PC, and helping someone with that is a valuable service. You outsource your home security, health security, and social security ... why not your family's pc security?

Thanks for the post stuntdubl. I agree with you about outsourcing all other things...why not outsource something as important as your child's web-surfing security.

It seems that many parents aren't aware of their kid's surfing habits, etc...I might look into this in more detail...

I'm also curious to see if anyone has ever used remote access to monitor a client's PC for security breaches, or any other family PC related issues (like sites visited by their kids).

Thanks!
