Where to advertise?

We are a UK web site with a truly international, but English-speaking target audience and a stupid domain name that is too long and complex for people to spell (yes I know, but it's well established).

Any suggestions for advertising? We have, in the recent past, used and dismissed as non-cost effective:

1) Google Adwords
2) Banner exchange programs

We are wondering perhaps about Banner advertising through Fastclick or Casale.

Any thoughts?

Have you thought of an affiliate scheme? If you are selling items/services this might work.

Any search engine marketing program depends on the product you advertise and sell. Do you sell web design and related sevices or e-books or some products?
