How much should I charge?

Hi,

My site gets over 1 million page impressions a month with a daily average of 6-9,000 daily visitors.

I plan to seek sponsorship soon once I have rebuilt it and am hoping to attract a long term (12 months) sponsor/advertiser to the site.

My site's readership are loyal, play an active part in the site and are known to have a disposable income. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, if not I apologise and please feel free to edit but I feel this will maybe help people to ascertain just what type of visitor I get. They are football fans, or soccer fans basically.

Any ideas what type of figures I should have in mind? I don't want to undervalue myself or scare peopel away.

Thanks

P.S I'm talking in pounds sterling here and not Dollars.

I don't think you can really go with a set sum here, much better to try and evaluate each potential advertiser as and when they contact you, since the figure is going to vary tremendously according to where they want the link, whether it's a banner, how big it is, and most importantly how much money you think you can get out of them.

I'm currently looking at providing advertising space on a couple of sites following numerous emails about prices. I suggest having a search around for other sites in your niche that currently offer advertising and who have their advert options and prices on display. Looking at the quality of the site / number of visitors etc gives you a much better idea about resonable amounts people are will ing to pay.
You'll certainly see a few sites that offer advertising and due to the poor quality / visitor numbers / high pricing are not currently displaying and ads.

One approach I use is to approximate a CPM for the advertiser that is somewhat in line with industry CPMs. So, for example, I might charge anywhere from $.4-$.9 per CPM, depending on how targetted I think it will be (more for targetted advertisers), and justify it by saying this is in line with what a CPM ad would cost in Fastclick or Burst. Advertisers seem to be accepting the explanation - would love to hear other thoughts on this as well.

I visited a few sites within my market sector and located what they were charging for their ad space. They seemed a bit high plus they have better market share than me so I set my pricing at less than half what they charge.

My game plan is to set the pricing at what I think is reasonable and then count on feedback from my advertisers to learn the true value of my ad space. If they're leaving in droves - prices are too high. If they're buying more ad space prices are either right on the money or too low.

You should be able to get about a pound per thousand impressions if the traffic is well targeted. That would only bring you in about one thousand pounds per month. It's up to you if that's worth it - if not you may want to sell other ads - can you mail me your URL? (use the webmaster world system to message me) Thanks! I can help you sell adverts.
