How much to charge for Newsletter Ads

A large company contacted me about advertising on my newsletter publication sent out once a month to approximately 10,000 people (US businesses).

The company would like to sponsor the newsletter. What is a reasonable rate to charge? I realize rates can vary widely based on different factors, but I was wondering if someone could give me a ballpark figure from which to start.

If I was you, I would go and visit my competitor's web sites and see what their rates are, this will give you exact idea of how much you can charge. You must also consider where the ads will appear in the newsletter and how valuable your readers are.

The problem is that most competitor sites don't mention any figures, they say contact us for pricing.

The one or two that I have found that do mention a number are charging really high rates. They tend to be large established sites.

I've tried asking for similar figures but advertisers have indicated that the price is too steep. I'm thinking of just asking the advertiser what they consider to be a fair price, but I'm afraid they may try to lowball me.

Start with something that you feel is fair to you and the advertiser, when you first start out you will have to go with a good offer to start getting the advertisers pouring in, after that you can begin to increase the price.

Sounds like it'll take a bit of back and forth negotiation, but that sounds about right.

The good news is I have at least two, possibly three advertisers interested which is a good start. At least I know there is a demand :)
