how to get started?

Up to now I've only been working on my own sites and they are receiving quite some visitors without too much work. It was just simply follow the 26 steps of WW.
Now, I have been offered a freelance job for SEO. Are there 26 steps too to follow?
I thought about making a list with things that could be optimized on the site and a list with offsite things.
What will be most effective on the short term?

I will be paid a % of the sales. do you think that that is ok, of should I ask a fix amount for a reached goal?

I'd say just do it. What's there to know? You already know how to optimize a site. Personally I like to work for a percentage. SEO work is an ongoing job, so it could earn you money over a long period of time.

That really is a personal preference. What do you feel comfortable with? It also depends on the profit margin per sale, their current sales, the demand for that product/service, their current rankings, how competitive their keywords are (will you be spending all day obtaining IBL's, etc.) and their marketing budget for SEO (paid directory listings, etc.).

I took the job. And am happy with the %. Since it's my first job, I'll feel more confident this way. If it doesn't work out, I won't have to charge the, a lot. And if I work hard and do the right things, I can make a lot of money.
The start will be hard, because the site is a mess and I'll be helping a lot without getting paid. But eventually.....

Out of curiousity what is the time frame until you get payed? As I have experienced SEO work can take sometime to get into full swing.

Btw Im looking for someone to optimize my web page.Im paying good money. Goals are: #4 for google and #1 for yahoo and msn. If someone is interested and think he has the skills, sticky me for the keywords and more information.

Webber, 26 steps is a wonderful think. Just folow it BUT REMEMBER, in SEO, avoid giving any warranties .

Search Engines are too dynamic these days to be tamed by any such steps.

I just try to stick with Brett's 26 steps, because many things on the site has to be redone.

This company is selling a seasonal product and I have 5 months before the season starts. That is a nice period to get up in the SE's. I guess I won't be making a lot of money before the season starts, but by that time most of the work is done and I can take it a little easy.

It's only after the season that I can tell if it worked out or not.
