How many SEO projects can you handle?

When is it time to hire people

I was wondering how many SEO projects can a person working alone manage?

When does one think of hiring people?

Those who decide to hire, what profile of people do they hire first?

How is a good SEO firm organized? How many people? What profiles?

I know the questions are too broad but your individual ideas would be appreciated and show the way to those who are interested to grow.

I would say when you feel that you are reaching your limits is the time to look into hiring someone else.

When does one think of hiring people?
When you are making enough profits to live off of and can still have money left to hire someone else. It's important that you also have some money left to promote your services too because you need to continue growing.

Those who decide to hire, what profile of people do they hire first?
I always look at the projects they have done in the past, maybe even get in contact with the people that own the site that was SEO by him and see what they thought about him or her and what the results were. Look to see if they have worked for any other company. Also test them with a test, this could include questions and having them SEO a small test site.

How many people?
This depends on what your needs are.

Thanks for your views robotsdobetter. I agree that answers can vary between people.

What I really wanted to know was how the big SEO firms are organized. How many projects do they simultaneously work on? How do they organize their work? Do they have one person managing a project or do different teams work on the same project? Would appreciate if anyone working for such a firm could provide these answers.

It again varies depending on the culture and management of the firm and the type of clients they deal with.

I've worked with a small / medium sized SEO firm where an overall manager would manage the projects and each employee (SEO) would work on specific sites (actual technical implementation). This was dealing with small clients so quite a high turnover.

I've also worked with a large SEM firm dealing with big brand clients, offering a bespoke SEO service. In this instance, the technical aspect is centralised within a small tech team and each client has a dedicated campaign manager to deal with the marketing / client facing side of the project.

Something to think about when hiring - are you looking to strengthen your product offerings or looking for someone to take on work and do it as you do it?

You could hire someone soley to do keyword research and link building, thereby freeing up your time. Or you could hire someone to take on full campaigns.

Both have very different skill sets.

Thanks Marketing Guy. That was helpful. Could you also share with me approximately how many projects did an account manager manage. Also, the number of staff in the larger SEO firm and how many projects were they able to manage.

It varies - lots of different client sizes. Some people deal with 2 or 3 big brand clients on a regular basis, others have 30 or 40 SME's.

It's really down to the level of work you are expecting an account manager to handle.

The larger firm had 20 staff - not sure about the project total.

That was a big help. Thanks. I'm no way near hiring other people yet, but just wanted to know how many people I might need on the long run to plan an office space.
