List of rotten I.P.s?

Is there a tentative list or discussion anywhere that lists IPs I should be blocking? My site is going live in about a week and I don't want a ton of harvesters and other spammers running their bots wild on my site. I've heard a lot of people block half of china.

Anyhow, if anyone could point me to a list or list some IPs they've come across with suspicious behavior, please list them.

Thanks,
Brandon

Your question is a pretty big one and largely depends on which sectors your business is in and what your goals are.

If your goal is to stop spambots from harvesting email addresses from your site, then take steps to obscure the email addresses. You could block common spambot useragents but that wouldn't catch them all.

Blocking any IP that exhibits "suspicious behavior" is probably not a good idea unless you have a very smart system for identifying and scoring behavior as suspicious. I like to make these decisions based on multiple metrics such as IP, useragent, geolocation, browser capabilities, language settings, and presence in RBL's (Realtime BlackList), etc.

Also, another concern isn't just which IP's to block but for how long to block it. I generally block an IP for a week or two.
