I was wondering what all of you think of best/worst web design season in terms of getting new clients, getting more work from old clients? I know that niches have different patterns, but there got to be some general time of the year?

I've heard that summer's slow. I know it's a bad time for me in general for the similar reasons. Many decision makers are on vacation during the summer.

I would say it depends on your niche, clientele, and target audience.

For instance if you target business owners that get a lot of summer-time business (say a vacation destination) you might get a lot of work in the summer time.

The opposite might be true if you lived in Vail, Colorado.

summer is generally slower. fall is usually a peak. march and april is also slow due to tax season.

We peak in October-November and April-May (mostly southern hemisphere clients - all genres).

Varies by niche and client.

Ever consider competitive intelligence? It's an amazing advantage. Highlight a desired account (more biz from existing, or perhaps one your competitor has now...) and taregt them for an "investigation" (you can hire people to do it or do it yourself).

Find out everything you can. Pretty soon you'll know how their heart beats, and then just predict the nest step and see what happens.

Example 1: you call to pitch a client on the day after he's internally anounced a downsizing and exit from a market due to heardships. Bad luck.. or sloppy timing?

Example 2: you learned that Univ of Whatever has submitted a letter of intent to compete for a big Cancer research grant from the government. Grant proposals are due May 1st. Grants will be awarded September 1st. They are considered a leader in cancer research, and have big name doctors. You can see their current website is so poorly done it is a joke. You pitch the doctors in early March, suggesting you could handle their web systems for them. You hit them again in early April with some free ideas for how they might use the web as part of their project, and offer you assistance in advance of their submission. If they are at all interested, you'll get called.

Summer is always slow for us, reasons as mentioned earlier. Busiest time is definitely January-May. Seems everyone has new money in their budgets at the start of the year and our phone starts ringing right away on the first day of business after the new year. Then we get busy again in the fall as some clients have holiday-related projects.
