So what would you do? This is a government owned web site which is actually stealing my copy "word for word" and using it to advance their ranking!

I am gob smacked. I knew they were using my site to select keyword phrases to go after ... but now I find they are acually stealing my copy!

Holy cow. How low is that? My own government is out to get me! And these people are suppsed to be the best SEO's in the territory! Bwah ha ha!

Perhaps I should be flattered ... but instead I'm just pissed off! I feel like calling the Chief Minister and letting him have it!

So what would you do?

Er, write to them?

Given who they are, I would put your chances of success at very high to practically guaranteed.

Write to whom? The SEO company, the tourist board or the Chief Minister?

The owner of the website of course.

There's no point writing to the SEO company - they'll know exactly what they're doing.

I bet the government dept doesn't.

PS What Country are we talking about here?

Never mind - problem solved!

I called a friend of mine who was recently appointed to the Board of Directors and she is going to handle it ... quietly.

It presents a very sticky situation for an expatriot to challenge the government here.

I wonder if the SEO firm will still be paid the exorbitant fees they are charging once this is made known to the Board members and Minister of Tourism?

Liane why are you keen to resolve this issue in a hush hush way?

There is considerable potential for you to get good editorial coverage to the advantage of your commercial interests because of the wrong that has been done to you.

Who to write to?

How about an investigative journalist whose interests might include politics, internet security, copyright or intellectual property issues.

Letting them simply take it all down again without any penalty or damage is quite a lenient approach.

Perhaps Liane you are just a nice person :-)
The perpetrators have proven that they are not.

[1] note there is a webmaster I know of who was wronged like this, admittedly in a larger way by an overseas party and took such a publicity route to get redress. I expect he simply could not afford to go directly to law in that country anyhow. However he is a clever individual and I do know that the other site was removed and I expect his business interests were very well boosted as a result.

Or, depending on your business, you could come to some arrangement in which they use your "approved" content in return for publicity links? Could be a little gold mine for you!

this information originally appeared on Lianes website - for more about this subject contact her!

Well ... I am a nice person but it has more to do with ...

It presents a very sticky situation for an expatriot to challenge the government here.

Unless you have ever lived in a free society where "free" speach is not necessarily ingrained in the day to day workings or your chosen country ... you can't possibly understand that, at times, diplomacy will fetch better results than altruisitic values. Being right has nothing to do with anything. How one handles the situation, without publicly embarassing ones government does.

Liane I just saw this thread rise up again and read your answer. Well I like to think that I am also a nice person like you.

I suggested the PR = press relations (not the others :-) because it seemed someone had abused a position of trust in a naughty way. Parenting required!

Government serves population in my book :-)
not topsy turvey :-)

Like us though all types will be in there :-)
Your argument now seems sensible to me.

Like instinct :-)

Ot: I know a fun poem on instinct but my last try to post prose here seems to be missing now :-(

Hope you have a good Monday Liane

Aaaaah yes... I remember the days when I lived in Canada and used to trust in and believe that theory. Those were the good old days, but now I live somehwere else and I no longer kid myself about the facts of life in other countries. ;)

Yiiiikes!

Sue sue sue. You could make a looooooot of money.

Call a few copyright lawyers. They will no doubt work on commission as the offenders are asset rich and have clearly committed a copyright offense.

Liane lives in a small place and politics is a whole different game in places like that... i think the subtle approach far the best.

actually gung-ho is never good, upsetting people can come back to haunt you wherever you are.
