I have a client who have asked me to build them an intranet/extranet with document management facilities.
The initial focus is on the extranet as partner organizations need to be able to view/update relevant documents/materials online.
Secondary is creating an intranet which will provide fairly standard information within the company in a centralized resource. It would be a bonus if this could also handle document management, but they were looking at sharepoint as a possibility for this, which I guess I'd have to hook in to the rest of the system somehow.
Do you guys think it would be easier to obtain this solution through implementing an existing enterprise CMS or to code up a custom solution to target exactly what we need? They're fairly microsoft oriented and want to run the intra/extranets on IIS.
I'm fairly good with PHP & Java, but am willing to learn other languages if necessary. I was thinking that sharepoint might require some .NET code, and some of the CMS I've already looked at use different technologies (i.e. Plone).
At the end of the day I want something that's not going to be complicated for them to use. I'm tempted to use typo3, Plone or openCMS for something like this but I'm not sure the end users would be tech-savvy enough to handle it.
Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated!
It's a terribly difficult question to answer. If you go with a package you can get up and running quickly, and can use lots of features already built-in. However, a package may not do exactly what you want. A custom built CMS does exactly what you want but it has to be, er, built...
Here's a couple of threads that may be helpful:
What content management software (CMS) are you using [webmasterworld.com]
CMS Blues [webmasterworld.com]
Which CMS do you use? [webmasterworld.com]
I know each CMS application has to be evaluated individually and I guess without writing lots more about this individual case.. Well it wouldn't be worthwhile I suppose.
I guess I'll just have to dig into each one and see what extensions there are already available and go from there..
Don't suppose anyone knows if there are any open source CMS which can provide the same kind of functionality as Sharepoint?
