Publishing an Ebook

I'm thinking of writing a ebook (actually, I already started). But, when it is finished, where do I go from there? I can setup hosting, do websdesign, SEO, etc. But, how do I make the ebook downloadable in a secure form? How do I prevent it from being copied or published on p2p-networks?

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a tricky issue. While there are a few solutions available, they make your product less usable --and certainly less user-friendly!-- IMO. Some people would even say that protected software (including ebooks) "attracts" hackers looking for a challenge.

A better approach might be to 1) over-deliver, 2) make sure your customers understand that you're offering great value, and 3) explain you have to live as well. (One writer I know shows a picture of himself with his family, including a baby, on the sales page of every ebook.)

Remember: it is better to make $10 on an ebook and sell 1000 copies, than to gain $100 and sell 50...

I'm not really interested in too restrictive DRM. Just enough too make sure no-one hacks / copies the book or that it isn't too easy to download it. I google for some sollutions, but they indeed didn't appeal to me. They were exensive and required readers to download extra software.

As a sidenote; what are the expected costs for publising an ebook?
