I run a website which generally receive about 5,000 hits per day. Last 3 days someone sent me tons of hits (more than 1 million per day) without any reason (at least I don’t see it). All hits come from about 1500 IPs.
Someone have an idea how to stop this traffic or what can I do to keep my server up?
Thank you for any help or suggestions!

Welcom wm00!

You could block the traffic via referrer.

SetEnvIfNoCase Referer badsite.com bad_ref=1
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from All
Deny from env=bad_ref

Maybe you could explain the situation more?

Are the hits are coming in randomly, without a proper referrer, or is this a case of a high traffic site bleeding traffic to you? Do you think it is a DOS?

If you have a dedicated box two things you could do to keep the server less strained is to turn KeepAlive off, or bring it's max down and drop KeepAliveTimeout down to a couple of seconds.

I had the same problem with my FTP server. Someone here at WW told me to contact my ISP (they had a specific address for this: abuse@isp.com) .

I did and the response was terrific. They were able to block the IP within an hour.
