Favicon problems

I saved the image as 'favicon.ico' and put "<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/ico" href="/favicon.ico" />" in the head.

It works in the url bar in firefox but not ie. It works in the bookmarks in ie, but not in firefox.....?

any help is appreciated.

Firefox has improved, but favicon handling isn't it's strong suit. I sometimes get none, sometimes have favicons associated with the wrong sites in the bookmarks and so on.

As for IE, I don't believe it ever shows favicons in the address bar.

Favicons are cached and seem to have a very long life before being refreshed.

To fix this, in a given browser, type the url of the icon. Generally you will also need to refresh the page with (shift/ctrl) F5.

Having said that, I am not aware of any browser that handles favicons well.
