in search of .. a good CMS

i'm in search of a good content management system. any suggestions on where / how to start? i'd rather pay for something but i've seen a few like hotbanana that may be just a bit out my reach financially ... but then i'd rather pay than get something too common and hackable like phpnuke.

any suggestions or thoughts welcome please, thanks.

This is also open source like PHPNuke but try "Mambo".
