Was looking at someone elses source code.

And found this - new to me!

I did a search for a pretty competetive term to see what kind of SEO the Number 1 site had in place. I found this snippet just before the <head>

This site has very little SEO to be honest and has naff all backlinks. Yet, it ranks No1 for a term that I would love to be top ranked for.

Does anyone understand what I am seeing. My initial feelings are that this site is possibly paying for the top slot! Like when you used to see ad's on US TV saying something like "AOL keyword "Keyword" OR is it just the site's way of tracking how they were found and thru which SE.

Anyone? I may be way off the mark but like I said it's new to me.

It actually looks like their server is inserting the referers into their pages on-the-fly as comments. Did you arrive at the page from google.co.uk[etc.]?

Yes this was a google referral. I can't make it do the same thing again now. Maybe it is just a tracking thing.
