Looking for feedback on MyPoints.com

They boast a 15% CTR, but I'm worried about the CR

Does anyone have experience advertising on MyPoints.com? What kind of conversions have you seen from their email campaigns?

We are considering a test with them but are concerned about the level of conversions we'll get after members clickthrough from the email. As a rewards-based program, I wouldn't be surprised to see very high CTRs, but without a solid CR, we're doomed.

Any experience?

Your post sounds kinda like this would be putting all your eggs in one basket. That is not something I would ever recommend.

However, I've been giving a lot of thought to CR lately and I've come to one simple conclusion:

CR is all about you and your site. It is fully independent of traffic (other than the fact you need a traffic number to calculate CR).

Traffic is the easy part. Finances aside for the time being - you can simply buy traffic. What you cannot buy is the consumer's willingness to spend his money at your site. You have to earn this and contrary to popular belief this is still up for grabs. I don't care how much money you have or how much traffic you bring to your site. If you drop the ball on the sales end of all this it doesn't matter if you had a million visitors if they're not spending the money. You can buy 'targetted' traffic to some degree but at the end of the day you have to sell them.

All this to say - are you confident in you and your site's ability to sell your visitors? If you answer yes then I'd say you have a shot.

What is your basic conversion rate from your most high traffic targetted terms? If that rate is paying the bills and you have reason to believe that you email campaign will be reasonably targetted as well then I'd take a chance on it.

I certainly believe they get a 15% CTR. In fact, I figured it might be higher. However, I suspect that of those 15%, you will be lucky to get 1% that even stays on your page for 2 seconds, or enough time to see what your site really is.

People are rewarded for clicking to your site under the MyPoints system. However, they do not need to stay, just to click through.

Common practice is for the recipient to click on the link, and shut the browser window as soon as it opens. Then proceed to delete the email.

I wouldn't get your hopes up from getting anything from it, unless you have a really enticing offer that captures the viewers intrigue with your one sentence sales pitch that MyPoints gives you (next to the button to click through and get credit).

Great feedback, thank you.

Yes, "doomed" might be a little dramatic here :) - concerned would be a better description. We have a diversified online advertising presence but no direct experience with a rewards-based site.

Our average CR is between 4%-9% sometimes reaching as high as 12%-15% depending on the audience, so I feel the potential is there. I'm just wary of the "click for points" mentality bmcgee describes. That's why I asked. I singed up to test the waters and find myself clicking through just to collect the points, so I figure that's what most people will do.

Fortunately we have the ability to test a small quantity without a lot of risk in case it bombs. If not, there is plenty of room to roll-out.
