I am on a virtual server - so many websites sharing the same IP. Differentiated just be different domain names.

Now, I know that with many websites - you can visit them not just by putting their domain name into your browser url window, but by putting their IP into your browser url window.

I want to do this for my site. But of course - I share my IP with many sites. When I put my given IP into my browser - I get nothing. How can I make it work? How can I visit my site using an IP rather than a domain name?

On my server you type in the browser window...

[ipaddress...]

Username obviously being your FTP / Site username...

Make sure you add the trailing slash if you try it as it doesnt work without it.

Failing that contact your hosting company as they should know a way to do it.

Tried it and sadly didnt work. Would be great to have some other suggestions. My host is far from helpful and are in a different time zone. So, sadly I fear I maybe on my own with this one if no one here can perhaps provide some insight. My server is apache with Plesk.

This must be documented by your ISP somewhere in plain sight, because everybody needs to be able to access their host and configure their website in advance of their domain being pointed to the new IP address.

Did you try Angelis' solution without the tilde (~)?

.

But on the servers I run you do this my ftp using an ip address and a username, the combination takes you to the right virtual server.

I've had requests to do this in the past and had to rig the apache files so that www.my-domain.com/~site/www.your-domain.com/ is interpreted by the server to go to the virtual site.

Generally, I find that people buy a domain and set up hosting before they have any content so it's not usually a problem.

BTW the last virtual host I used never gave me an IP address per se, but set up a subdomain instead. Something along the lines of myuserid.server123.net

I assume it was to give them the flexibility to move sites or entire servers around seamlessly.

this is what my host told me to try. But it doesnt work. Can anyone suggest a variant on this that I could try with more success?
