I have shifting hosting to a new webhost about 2 months back. while I was checking my website ranking in yahoo I found that the index page of the nameserver for my website contained a page from my website (with Adsense).
to explain the name server for my website is
ns1.abcd.com
when I open www.abcd.com , i find a page from my website - complete with my adsense code.
My website is hosted on a windows server. Is it a technical error or a deliberate problem created my hosting company?
any feedback will be very helpful

www.abcd.com should resolve to a different IP address than ns.abcd.com. And, hopefully, to a different server.

Do they?

If so, and they never configured a website to respond to www.abcd.com, and your website is the default website on the server, then that would explain it.

If this is supposed to be a shared server, then they should know enough to disable the default website. Or, alternatively, put a lone, default html page on the default site that says "No web server is configured at this address."

thanks for the information. Both my website and their name server to the same IP address. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Your website (www.yourdomain.com) has the same IP address as their name server (ns.abcd.com)?

Anyone else feel free to chime in here. But I think you should get a different hosting company. Quickly.

yes both have the same IP address. Is it likely to be an error, or is it done to create problems for me?

I would highly doubt it is done to "create problems for you", but the fact that your host's nameserver has the same IP address as your website says a good bit about your hosting provider (and what it says is NOT good).

I'm with john_k, find a more reputable host. :)

If they both have the same IP address, then they are (very likely) both on the same physical server. I don't know much about Name Servers, but I do know that they should be running on dedicated boxes.

It is possible for a firewall router to route traffic to different servers based upon the port number. So you can't be 100% sure that the services are on the same physical server. However, if they know enough to do that, I would then have to wonder why they don't simply use two different IP addresses.

This can't be a large hosting company. Do you know the people that run it? What you've said indicates that they have everything running on one physical server. It also indicates that you are their first or one of their first customers.

This is all a lot of conjecture on my part. Only the hosting company would know for sure. I guess I would start out by asking them the same basic question you originally posted here and see how they respond.

this company claims to have been in the webhosting business since 1998 and have some of the largest companies here, are hosting their websites with them. Thanks for all your feedback

That's why I said that my input was a lot of conjecture and that you should just ask them what's going on. There may be a valid/honest reason for what you are seeing. At least give them the chance to explain.
