What options do I give new users?

Hi.

Are there any guidelines as to what must be offered regarding signing up for receiving email marketing?

For example, I co-run a website loosely based around the VBulletin engine, and one of the options during member registration is do members want to receive promotional emails (content related to the website they're joining) from us.

Do we have to offer the option of signing up for these during the registration process, or can we just set everyone to be signed up by default, as long as the emails that get sent out have an unsubscribe option within them?

TIA

Hi glamdring,

If you're thinking about the legal issues, we can't discuss that here - it's outside the remit of Webmasterworld, and legal advice on public forums causes all kinds of issues.

If you're thinking about the perception of the service to your users, personally I would default the option to "off" and only send mail to a user that has specifically requested it.
