I want to upload really quite a large website (of the order of GB) and FTP really isn't that fast when dealing with this kind of size. I was wondering - would it be completely bizarre to ask my web host if I could send the website to him on a DVD in the mail? Has anyone else done this? Do you think they would then upload it for me there - it being a local transfer, I guess it would be very quick.

No harm in asking, it all depends on what they're prepared to do for the level of service you've paid for.

It is certainly a feature of high-end hosting accounts and managed server offerings; most will allow you to mail a CD or DVD which they will then mount either directly on your box or on a network share. Asking them to go on and actually install stuff is again a matter of what level of service you get for what you've paid for. The usual deal is that you can pay for an admin to do anything at the console of your server, but usually for an hourly fee.
