With XP/IE6 I couldn't find a way to permanently set the status bar, and I really use it quite a bit. Found a fix: perma-fixing the IE6/XP status bar [pratie.com]

I don't think the IE6 status bar "blinked out" on 98, I only noticed I missed it when I migrated to XP a few weeks ago.
