Artificial bandwidth bottleneck to test cable like it was dial-up?

From 5mbps to 2kb p/sec

I'm looking to test my work on a dialup connection but shucks, I only have five megabit cable!

I would imagine someone at one point or another figured that since half the people on the www are still surfing (which is amazingly similar to the word suffering) with dialup that they went ahead and created some type of bandwidth bottleneck program you could use to lower one's bandwidth. Anyone know of anything like that?

There's a bunch of those things out there, but honestly why use emulation when you can use the real thing, just get hold of a dialup account number from a friend, setup a modem, which costs $20 or less, then just test the site over a dialup connection, it's easy to do that, and then you really know how it performs in the real world. As long as you don't use the dialup much it won't have any affect on your friend, since as far as the isp knows, he's just travelling and accessing his account from a laptop.

I've been short on time between clients, and rolling blackouts not letting my alram wake me before 5pm here in Florida. I was having trouble with the first suggestion though I'm sure if I play with it a bit it might suite my needs.

I'm not wild about clientside java in any possible sense as it has been the only source of Firewfox woes (viruses) but if the other two suggestions don't work easily and sanely I might not mind checking and unchecking that java checkbox.

I have yet to be able to check out the third suggestion, perhaps tonight! :-)

I'll post how it goes, thanks for the suggestions!
