I have a client who tells me that he'd like his text navigation (css controlled) to be in "logical" order! However, I'd like the links to be in alphabetical order for easier navigation. Does this order matter?

Logical order would trump alphabetical order I think as long as there aren't too many nav items. In other words, the most important first, then going down. For main navigation, I've never noticed any tendency to make the items alphabetical, although once you get over 10 or 15 items on a submenu I'd make them alphabetical, but that's just me. Or a combination, primary in logical order, secondardy/tertiary in alpha order if there are a lot of options.

2by4, I agree with the primary/secondary solution. Landing on a website for the first time can be a confusing situation as it is and an alphabetically sorted list is one of those standards that I can at least expect. MSN.com does a great job of combining the two. It logically sorts the menu items on the left while alphabetically sorting the sub-categorized links. This system may be worth looking at, bartainer.
