Question regarding outbound links.

Regardig Bretts posts way back when that stated a successful website within 12. On this particular point below:

G) Outbound Links:
From every page, link to one or two high ranking sites under that particular keyword. Use your keyword in the link text (this is ultra important for the future).

My question is does the outbound link have to be on homepage too? Also does it have to be to another relevant site?

Or can it be lets say pointing to a site that offers internet service such as a counter or hosting company etc....? Or does it have to offer a service to the user/customer?

Finally can someone show me an example of how this link with keyword in text should look like?

Thanks!

A counter or hosting company doesn't count. Completely misses the point. By linking out to high quality, related sites Search Engines will be able to deduce that your pages are related to their subjects, and this will enhance your search engine placement for those subjects. You are doing this for your own interests, and your readers interests, not really for Brett or search engines. Unless you want them to think you're site is about counters or that hosting company....

While it doesn't have to be on the home page, and there may be some design reasons you can't, it may well help you to do so.

Finally, a link with keyword text looks something like free Britney photos [webmasterworld.com] from her beach vacation!

Thanks for the good advise. One last question(s) what PR nubmer is considered good to put on all your pages? PR7,PR8,PR9?

Also do I be very relevant where they are my main competition? I know of a competitor who is a PR7. What's your advise?

Thanks!

The pagerank of the site you're linking to isn't the highest priority. It should be a good, human oriented, high quality site. An authority site (like the OFFICIAL fan club for Britney) or one of the most interesting or useful. All other things being equal, higher PR is better than lower. In many areas there are really good sites with PR 5 or 6. It just depends.

In most cases I wouldn't link to a direct competitor without a good reason. Best Buy shouldn't link to Circuit City (unless they're showing how much cheaper their prices are). Don't link to a direct competitor just because they have high pagerank if you both are trying to sell the same widgets.

OK

So why is it so important to use your main keyword in the text if its an outbound link?

Why is it such a good thing? How does google or any search engine treat it if it sees its your main keyword however its an outbound link?

I am having trouble understanding the benefits of this?

Does it really work? Do we have any success stories to share regarding this subject?

Please Advise.

Thanks!

Why is it important to use your main keywords on a page at all?

Why is it a good idea to have incoming links use your keywords?

Why can it help to have a keyword in a url?

"So why is it so important to use your main keyword in the text if its an outbound link?"

A: Each has the same answer and should be viewed the same way: they are used by a search engine to determine what a page is about, what it is related to. The clearer this is, the better the performance in search results.

Pages about widgets link to other sites about widgets. It's the way the web works, it's what makes the web a web. Search engines are exploiting this to improve the relevancy of results. Many webmasters abuse inbound link text, but fewer do on outbound links, which makes it a better indicator of quality in some areas.

There have been a number of threads here discussing the success of this strategy. Look around for them. Or, do a few searches and note how well Directories do in search engine results. They are nothing but a collection of OUTGOING links, organized by subject. Easy for a search engine to figure out what they're about, making them tough competition.

There is a recent thread that discusses many of these issues and some comments from Brett on the topic. You might find help here:
