I have a website that has been giving me a Norton message when hitting my forum homepage. It is a downloader.trojan problem.

I have found the following link is the culprit. bestcounter.biz. Now with my Mozilla browser, no problem. With my IE, I did the following. Under tools, internet options and security--- restricted sites. I added the bestcounter.biz and I no longer have the Norton message. By the way, I have run the Norton recommended removal instructions, lavasoft adware and spybot programs.

My host is telling me that it is probably caused by a sponsor's banner. But why does it only happen on the forum homepage? Those ads are on every page in my site.

I want to know how I can block this thing from the many users that come to my site and don't have their browers configured like I did mine to block that site.

If there are any suggestions, I am all ears. Thanks.

Not exactly sure about this one but First scan your own computer for virus.
[housecall.trendmicro.com ]

Then take another look on your website - If its still the same take off the banners for a while and then see if that has worked?

Disable Java (not Javascript). The only security issue I've EVER had with Firefox is getting viruses via Java and I've NEVER seen a site that I consider useful to use Java clientside.

Here's something to consider

1) Whenever someone has a problem of this sort, it's invariably a Norton product.
2) There are plenty of alternatives that are far less troublesome.

A couple of weeks ago, I was staying with my sister. One evening, she got back from work having spent hours fighting with a new computer installation. Amongst other problems email attachments were disappearing. Immediately I asked if any Norton stuff was installed - answer YES. The next day, on my advice, they stripped all the Norton stuff from one computer to see what would happen. The result was all problems were solved.

I have never used any Norton products myself, but I can honestly say that I have never come across a system that behaves properly and runs Norton software.

I agree with kaled, NA sucks. Most anti-virus programs (all that I've used that require installation) suck.
