The real 'best' open source code editor is another question, for linux kde, Kate is pretty good. For a free code editor, html-kit is ok but very bloated for what it does. Crimson editor is a very nice piece of freeware, not wysimwyg.
On the bright side, if you look around you should be able to find a used copy of dreamweaver mx out there, there really isn't anything remotely close to as good as it on the market that I'm aware of currently.
Most open source coders don't use wysimwyg editors I think, it was never a very high priority, although I'm sure nvu will be pretty functional one of these days.

Others may disagree, that's ok. Personally, I've never found any reason to upgrade from dreamweaver 4, I use dreamweaver for only one thing, site search and replace.
