How to get engines to list domain pointer and not sub-directory

Hi. I have a website sitting in a sub-directory <www.mydomain.com/website> with a domain pointer <www.domainpointer.com> that points to <www.mydomain.com/website>. Last month it had the top listing in Yahoo when someone searched on <domain pointer>. This week it's moved down in rankings and shows up as www.mydomain.com/website instead of www.domainpointer.com . Is there anything I can do to get the search engines to ignore the subdirectory and just list the domain pointer?

thanks!

la stella,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

The answer depends on what kind of server your site is hosted on, and what your technical definition of "domain pointer" is.

It is likely that this "pointing" was done incorrectly, which is the cause of this problem. Now, in addition to correcting the "pointing" you will have to take additional steps to remove the subdirectory-based listing from SE results. So, two steps will be required instead of one.

In addition, you may or may not have access to the tools needed to correct the problem, depending on your web host.

Thanks - the webhost is Netfirms and the domain pointer was an add-on domain - the pointer location was set through their control panel.
