Forum Moderators: phranque
This is my first post on this forum so lemme just send a "hello everyone" line...
Anyway, I'm starting a new abandonware gaming site (I used to have one), and I'm considering using FrontPage to make the site (although it makes really bad code, that gives problems with some browsers), but since I'm more used to it, I would have less problems setting up the database and configuring everything (although I've never set a db with frontpage).
I would really love to have a site compatible with most systems, and I'm up for a little learning but if not for the frontpage editor, the only choice would be a pre-made php engine (but most of them also have code problems).
I'm considering xoops, as it is very light, neat and dynamic, but I would have to remake most of the download section (to disable user-submited downloads, add screenshots, 5-star rating system, etc.).
What do you think would be a better choice for a fast-loading, powerfull, compatible and dynamic site?
Frontpage or Xoops (or any other site engine)?
Free, easy to setup, and very easy to manage.
If you want something more powerful with more features, I'd suggest looking at PostNuke CMS, it's my personal favorite cms, but it's a little tricky to setup and manage if you aren't that experience with similiar systems.
I've heard that Mambo is very user friendly and easy to manage, so that might be worth looking into.
PHPNuke is the other big cms out there. I personally don't like this system. It uses alot of system resources (mostly processing power because alot of code is executed on each page load), but it's fairly stable and decent, might be a good starter one for you.
The problem here, is that most rating systems don't allow the use of screenshots so I would have to add that (somehow).
I've used php-nuke but I didn't like it that much, that's why I switched to Xoops (on my current site). It's just working as a blog-thing, though...
As for using blog software, that just wouldn't do the trick. Maybe frontpage is the best option, since I can't program in PHP and I don't have much time to learn it right now.
D'ya think front page is that bad?
FrontPage 2003 is a very powerful tool. All that talk about "bad code" being generated by FP is, for the most part, a lot of outdated hype. Anyone who knows how to use the software and who has basic working knowledge of HTML can make perfectly valid site, without errors. The same goes for FP, DreamWeaver, or even NotePad.
If you're comfortable with FP, then stick with it.
I'll try things with frontpage, but could anyone direct me to a *good* site with FP tutorials? I mean, it's easy to google some FP sites, but if you could gimme a good one (specialy one that covers building a DB with FP), I'd be very happy.
Thanks for the help so far, though...
BTW, I'm using FrontPage 2002 SP3, but I guess code-wise it's as good as 2003. Is that correct?
