Hi,

I am interested in creating a site that provides free information and a portal-style interface. I was wondering how google.com manage to offer their services free, yet still make a profit.

they don't offer there services for free. Almost every visitor pay a fee in the form of viewing multiple advertisments.

ck out adwords or adsense.

Basically, you have 2 biz model routes to go:

1- use content as a loss leader for an upsell to products or services.
2- show advertising. (aka - give away traffic)
